Applying Classroom Technology to Enhance Educators and Students’ Health

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on education throughout the Asia Pacific region. As more and more schools resume, providing a healthy learning environment that meets hygiene standards, is proving to be a top priority for schools. In particular, germ transmission, poor indoor air quality and increased screen time, which can cause eye strain and myopia, are key risks to learning effectiveness and student wellbeing.

The COVID-19 pandemic has encouraged schools’ to rethink the balance between educational quality and a healthy learning environment. But what practical actions can schools take to build a smart, yet healthy classroom? We suggest starting with:

  1. Using screens with anti-microbial coatings to control germs:
  2. In 2011, researchers from the University of Naples published a paper that detailed how silver ion nanotechnology has antiviral properties . This prompted ongoing research into the technology, and how to broaden the number and variety of virus’ that can be controlled. When interactive displays incorporate higher concentrations of nano-ionic silver compounds, cured together with anti-glare coating and tempered glass, it gives the screen longer-lasting anti-bacterial properties, effectively eliminating germs transmitted through sharing touch screens.

  3. An air-quality sensor that monitors environmental parameters:
  4. Poor indoor air quality and ventilation affect learning performance. More importantly, it also causes coughing, eye irritation, allergic reaction, asthma, headache, and disease transmission. A real-time air quality sensor, located inside the interactive display panel, can monitor key environmental parameters in classrooms including temperature, humidity, PM 2.5, P10, CO2 and Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) concentration levels. This allows teachers to intervene with appropriate actions such as opening windows or adjusting air conditioning, protecting students health and allowing them to concentrate on lessons.

  5. A smarter solution that provides eye care:
  6. Many eye problems start at a young age, and may be due to increased screen exposure. Choosing a panel and monitor capable of eliminating blue lights, glare and flickers, gives both teachers and students a better quality viewing experience without damaging eyesight.
