Set in an apocalyptic United States, the “Death Stranding” event caused Beached Things (BTs) to begin roaming the Earth, suspended between life and death, and trying to consume living humans, creating a nuclear-level explosion, or a voidout. They produce a “Timefall” rain that ages or deteriorates what it lands on, rapidly killing people who get caught in it. BTs are not visible beyond the handprints they create, but a Bridge Baby (BB) can sense them and help keep their Porter safe. As they appear, the music and atmosphere shift, enhancing the intensity of the balance between life and death. With CinematicSound and CinematicColor technology on the X3100i, these moments are amplified to create full immersion for players.

An individual with DOOMS may be able to sense, see, or control BTs. Sam, our main character, has DOOMS, so he is able to sense BTs early on and, with the assistance of his BB, they are visible while navigating the open world to deliver cargo and reconnect the remaining cities. Connected to the sky by a dark spiral, they hover just above the ground looking like shadows or clumps of liquid. BTs are susceptible to the blood of an individual with DOOMS, so Sam uses blood bombs to destroy them. In the two images below, you can see a BT forming in the image to the left and being destroyed in the image to the right, creating a vibrant red blood explosion. Seeing them requires DOOMs, focus, and the crystal-clear image provided by the X3100i 4K gaming projector.

Sam and his BB, nicknamed Lou, have formed a bond that influences his decisions throughout the game, eventually helping him discover the truth about the BBs, BTs, and himself. Death Stranding goes beyond being just an action game with an emotionally driven narrative and a truly cinematic ending with a long cutscene that mirrors the length of a film. Sam plays a larger role in the story than he initially realizes. As he traverses the land and bonds with his BB, he’ll come across items left behind by other players, bridges built together, and terrain that can’t be traversed without assistance. Like the connection of the Chiral Network, the game connects players across the world, allowing them to leave items and bridges behind to assist others in their journey. Using the terrain scanning abilities, shown in the images below, you can see the path you’re meant to take, where you’ve already been, items or rest spots from other players, and different colored x’s to mark if the terrain is safe (green), risky (yellow), or unsafe (red). The original music of the game was already incredible, but new tracks have been added to elevate the mood and tension during missions or structured moments. Remastered for the PS5, the game includes expanded content with new missions, locations, and a unique Social Strand System that allows players to stay connected to each other by offering resources and support. The game also offers two graphics modes, performance mode with scaled 4K and fidelity mode with native 4K, that both provide HDR support.
