Golf Projector LW650 Facility Case Study

Golf simulators, which let golfers experience the realistic sensation of playing golf without visiting a course, have been introduced in Japan not only at amusement facilities like indoor golf courses but also by individuals who have installed them at home.

BenQ's LW650 WXGA laser projector is one of the lightest and most compact projectors in Japan, featuring a brightness of 4,000 ANSI lumens and weighing only 2.9 kg. It is also equipped with BenQ's proprietary SmartEco technology, which provides superior energy efficiency.

SmartEco technology automatically detects the luminance level of the content and adjusts the light intensity of the source accordingly, saving up to 70% more energy compared to conventional eco modes while maintaining image quality. Additionally, the LW650 features a standby mode that activates when no signal is detected for a certain period and an auto-off power function that turns off the projector automatically, contributing to effective power saving. The LW650 is the first laser projector in Japan to incorporate this SmartEco technology.

This compact projector, approximately the size of A4 paper (30×22 cm) and weighing around 2.9 kg, features an exceptionally lightweight design. It offers a 1.3x zoom function and includes various adjustment features, such as vertical and horizontal trapezoid correction to address distortions from angled projections, as well as corner adjustment functions to perfectly align the image with the screen. Its flexibility in placement is a significant advantage. With the durability inherent to laser light sources, it requires no maintenance, such as filter or panel replacements, making it ideal for 24-hour indoor golf facilities.

The LW650 has been introduced at t-Golf KASHI BASE

t-Golf KASHI BASE, which opened in November 2021, is a fully unmanned facility where visitors can enjoy golf at their own pace without concern about being observed. Since April 2024, BenQ's LW650 has been adopted as the projector for use with GOLFZON's golf simulator T1VISION.

Due to the deteriorating performance of our previous projector, we considered a replacement. The projector experienced thermal runaway during continuous 24-hour operation, and since t-Golf KASHI BASE is a fully unmanned facility, immediate issue resolution was challenging. At the golf fair in March 2024, we found that the durability of the LW650, showcased at the BenQ booth, matched the requirements of t-Golf KASHI BASE. The LW650 supports continuous 24-hour operation and features a dustproof design, making it an ideal fit and a significant factor in its adoption.

Conventional lamp-based projectors are not designed for continuous 24-hour operation. After a few hours of use, they become very hot and require a "cool-down" period where the power must be turned off. However, with the laser-based "LW650," continuous 24-hour operation is possible without any issues.

After the fair, we promptly inquired about the loan, and the response was excellent. We were able to test two projectors. Even if catalog specifications seem fine, projectors often do not perform as expected in actual use. In this regard, the free loan service was greatly appreciated, as it allowed us to try out multiple models.

Straightforward evaluation of the LW650

The first impression of the “LW650” was that it was light and small, but the projected image felt comfortable, and that it was able to express images well despite its small size.

At t-Golf KASHI BASE, the projector is used in an environment where the screen measures 4000×2200 cm and the projection distance is 4600 cm. When inquiring about key considerations for selecting a projector for future golf simulators, we were advised that "short focal length" is a significant advantage. It was noted that many people are considering installations in tight spaces with limited distance, so it's crucial to check both the focal length and installation flexibility.

The BenQ LW650 laser projector is compact and lightweight. Despite its small size, it projects clear and comfortable images with excellent quality.
