Game Character Design / China
Design can be very distinctive, self-oriented, and pure, but once we start working, many things can become complex. We need to find a balance between art and product. Sometimes, we face different markets and audiences. When expressing our own ideas and concepts, compromises and concessions may be necessary. Therefore, we often need to strike a balance and make choices between personal artistic direction and product market orientation.
Especially after working for some time, we must learn how to enjoy our work well. We need to determine where we can maintain our own judgment and pursuit, and where we need to compromise to meet market demands and consider ourselves as product thinkers. Only then can we truly enjoy the entire process.
My first personal work still feels like a work in progress to me. I consider my previous works more of exercises. I believe that a work needs strong elements of storytelling and personal expression. Personally, I have a strong interest in science fiction themes. I think designers generally have a strong imagination, and science fiction themes are easily portrayed through design and CG. Currently, I am still creating personal works, mostly related to science fiction, and I hope to share these works with everyone in the future.
How do you define a good design? I believe a good design should encompass two crucial aspects. First, as a designer, it's essential to please yourself. The work you create should be something you genuinely like and excel at. Being satisfied with your own work is the first step to consistently producing better designs in the future. Second, the design must be marketable. It should appeal to the market and be liked and accepted by people. It should spread quickly and have a long lifespan. I think these are two very important elements of a good design.
The initial motivation for studying design was actually very simple—it stemmed from my original passion. Since I was young, I've always loved drawing. While other students were taking notes in their textbooks at school, mine were filled with various illustrations of characters, and during classes, I would secretly draw many of these narrative cartoons. I remember in middle school, I created a whole comic book filled with these drawings. However, my homeroom teacher discovered it and confiscated it, which was heartbreaking for me because I had spent a long time working on it.
A few years ago, during our 20-year reunion from that middle school, our homeroom teacher returned the comic book to me. It was a tremendous surprise and brought me immense joy. Seeing those designs I drew when I was young was truly fascinating and meaningful to me.
Studying design has actually brought significant changes to my life, especially in recent years. I've always loved drawing since I was young and pursued this path through formal education, including art and design programs. During university, I specialized in art and design. After studying design, I found myself to be a naturally curious person, so I've explored and innovated in various industries such as advertising, collectible figurines, gaming, and film and animation.
I enjoy using design to navigate and innovate across different sectors that I'm passionate about. This includes recent interests in digital avatars and the metaverse, where I apply design perspectives to expand its role and impact in these industries.
