CG Designer / China
During my university studies, I majored in printmaking. Due to the relationship between printmaking and modern printing technologies, I encountered computers quite early on. Initially, I was hesitant to draw using a computer, and also at that time, the software couldn't achieve the same level of control as hand-drawing. However, as I spent more time with it, I discovered that software had its own unique characteristics that could evoke interesting feelings. Gradually, I fell in love with creating design graphics using computers.
I'm not sure how it has changed my life, nor do I know what life would be like without creating design, but I know whether it's pure art or design, both are things I personally enjoy doing. Everything has been smooth, and I intend to continue doing it.
It's actually quite difficult to define what constitutes good design and what doesn't. There's only appropriate or inappropriate design. Design isn't just an independent artistic creation, it's about solving problems. If a problem is effectively solved, the work can be considered as a good design. The problems people encounter evolve with each era and stage of development, so the essence and scope of design also continually change. This evolving nature is where the value of design lies.
The first formal design work I did was helping a friend from the China Central Academy of Fine Arts with book cover design. He was working part-time at a publishing house and was overwhelmed, so during summer break, when I had just learned to use design software for typesetting, I gave it a try. It was quite interesting. I remember it was a book about General Zhang, Xue-Liang. It was a hot summer. Our rented apartment didn't have air conditioning, and the two of us were sweating profusely as we sat in front of the computer. It's hard to believe more than twenty years have passed since then.
Design work requires a sensitive ability and a strong focus on both societal and personal aspects. It's difficult to imagine how a designer secluded in the mountains would approach their work.
