The BenQ AWCOLOR monitors and extremely accurate and uniform. As my work often involves with lots of strong colours, it’s important that I can see these as accurately as possible. And it’s not just about viewing. When I print my photos, I’m sure that the colours on the paper will be the same as on my BenQ monitor.

What is your favorite season for photography? Do you have a particular reason for enjoying shooting in that season?

Spring! I love colourful photographs and flowers and spring is absolutely perfect for that. Give me some flowers and I’m happy! :) Seriously though, it can be wildflowers in the mountains, bluebells in a forest, and of course the tulips in the Netherlands! I never get bored of them. Another reason why I love spring is that it often brings interesting weather conditions. At least in the Netherlands. Beautiful misty mornings is what I wake up early for.

What does your typical day in photography look like? Do you have a regular workflow?

It’s completely different each day. I try to shoot as much as I can. This is always a priority. Sometimes I’m happy when it rains a lot the whole day, so I can actually finish some postprocessing from recent work. I am also often traveling, so when I am home I am often planning next trips, do preparations, prepare lectures, clear gear, work in my home-gallery, you name it! There is a lot of variety in my job.

Do you remember your first piece? What is one of the most interesting stories you want to share?

Well, the first photo on my FlickR account was from my cat! Unfortunately that cat is not there anymore. But of course I’ve photographed much more before that. Also, I love my early work from Hong Kong. The ‘discovery’ area for my photography. I was very ‘free’ back then and enjoyed basically photographing everything on the streets. I miss those times sometimes. I have many stories to share actually! Maybe we can do a separate interview about these stories sometimes, because otherwise this piece will be very long :) My early days photographing volcanoes, how I made a name for myself in the Netherlands, exploring Kyrgyzstan and discovering new lands, Photographing penguins in Antarctica. So much to talk about!

Have you ever thought about what you would be if you weren’t a photographer?

Yes for sure! I Have always loved working in the creative industry, so I would 100% be doing something in there. I actually used to produce electronic dance music and play in clubs. Interesting right? Mainly techno and underground music. I was quite good at it and released a bunch of Vinyls as well. Good days! I could never really transform that passion into a job. I was also a (motion graphic) designer in the broadcasting industry. I know all kinds of software like Cinema 4D and After effects. Definitely comes in handy with photography as well.

For those planning to visit the city where you currently reside or were born, which landmarks or places do you recommend for photography?

I would highly recommend everyone to visit Amersfoort. It’s the city where I currently live, and I was also born here. It’s a beautiful medieval city with old city walls, ancient gates and beautiful churches. Everyone I brought here said they prefer it to Amsterdam :) It’s more authentic and less crowded. Come visit! :)
