The technical equipment of the schools in the municipality of Friesenheim, with its almost 13,000 inhabitants, showed clear signs of aging. In addition to the chalkboard, teachers in the classrooms only had older overhead projectors, beamers, a few media trolleys, televisions, and two digital blackboards in the secondary school, at their disposal. With the exception of a few notebooks and computer rooms, the topics of digitization and new media had largely passed by schools so far.
After detailed consultation with the specialist retailer Uriot GmbH, representatives of the municipality of Friesenheim and the teaching staff of the associated schools—including elementary and secondary schools—looked for solutions to best enable the integration of new media into teaching in the future. The concept should be consistent for all grades in all schools. Finally, 17 BenQ RP654K displays were purchased.
The new flat screens with Wi-Fi connection complement the lessons in a sensible way and have quickly become a valued tool of the teaching staff. For example, lessons at an elementary school continue to consist primarily of reading, writing and arithmetic, although it is often helpful if what is said can also be visualized with a video or interactive graphic. In addition, teachers can now use their iPads in conjunction with the Apple Airplay integrated in the display as a mobile document camera and flexible presentation tool.

The municipality of Friesenheim has two secondary schools as well as three elementary schools (with two branch offices) at which a total of 1,200 students are taught. Due to the outdated and partly also defective technical equipment of the educational institutions, digitization has not been a big topic so far. The technical possibilities in the classrooms were limited to several overhead projectors, beamers, televisions and some notebooks. In the course of time, many of the devices had technical defects and were no longer replaced by functional alternatives. As a result, students and teachers, especially from elementary schools, were ultimately unable to benefit from the use of new media..
In order to give teachers the opportunity to add interactive elements to their lessons, large-format flat screens with touch screens were purchased. The specialist retailer Uriot GmbH & Co. KG from Offenburg, which has been working with the municipality of Friesenheim for quite some time, provided advice during the selection process and finally recommended the BenQ displays of the RP series, with a screen diagonal of predominantly 65”. The municipality equipped the Education Center with a total of 17 devices, and more devices are already planned for 2019.
The teachers were familiarized with the possibilities of interactive monitors in two extensive training sessions. Existing fears about using the new technology were quickly dispelled in this way. Since the elementary school still focuses on learning to write, calculate and read, the new flat screens play a more supportive role during the lessons. The teachers particularly appreciate the option that the content of the lesson can now be visualized much better. An explanatory video, a picture, or a graphic in the right place can contribute a lot to understanding.
By using the modern interactive BenQ RP654K displays, it is also possible to make the lesson more diversified, which also has the positive side effect of prolonging children's attention span. For the other school types, on the other hand, the integration of modern e-learning content as well as the comprehensive interaction of all students is the main focus. In addition, the connection with the Apple Airplay integrated in the display enables teachers to efficiently use their iPads as a mobile document camera and flexible presentation tool. Thanks to high flexibility, the systems can also be optimized for the individual requirements of individual departments.
New interactive learning techniques are rapidly becoming the norm in the effort to boost student performance. But many of the behaviors that are required for group interactive learning can unknowingly spread dangerous pathogens to students, faculty, and their families. This is a relatively new issue in education since the traditional model of using a projector as the primary display limited the physical touching of common objects in the classroom.
